If Vikram Sarabhai is called the father of India’s space programs, there will be no exaggeration. He was not only a great scientist but also a social worker. Today, the entire functioning of Indian Doordarshan is based on astronomy. The work of connecting Doordarshan with space, which Vikram Sarabhai did, will always be remembered for him.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was born on 12 August 1919 in Gujarat. His father Ambalal Sarabhai was a famous businessman. Apart from getting his primary education at home, he also got education in horticulture, technical, language, science, dance, music, painting photography etc. Dr. Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai) passed the examination in Natural Sciences from St. John’s College Cambridge in 1939 after completing higher education from Ahmedabad College.

On returning to India, he continued to work on astronomy with Chandrashekhar Venkataraman and Homi Jehangir Bhabha. He was married to the famous dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai, from whom the only daughter Mallika Sarabhai was born. She is also a skilled dancer and holds her own special place in the field of acting. In 1942, a paper was presented on the intensity and change of space rays. In 1945, again went to the Cambridge.

In 1947, PHd was completed and carried out research work in the Cavendish and Cambiz laboratories. Subsequently, a Physics Research Laboratory was established in Ahmedabad for external and internal space studies. Till 1965, he gave impetus to the space program in the laboratory of the Director. In 1955, Space Studies Centers were also established in Gulmarg, Thiruvananthapuram and Kodaikanal in Kashmir. While working as the President of the Space Research Organization, he launched a satellite called Rohini Maneka and Aryabhata in 1975.

Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai) did research work related to the atmospheric magnetization of the Earth and the Sun, the position of the Sun, etc. He established many industries in Gujarat and other areas of the country, including Sarabhai Engineering, Research Center, Operation Research Group, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Center etc. He was also the chairman of the General Conference of the Space Atomic Energy Agency. He was also awarded the Bhatnagar Award and Padmabhushan in peace. Dr. Sarabhai (Vikram Sarabhai) merged into Panchatatva on 30 December 1971.

Dr. Sarabhai is said to be the father and mastermind of space research programs. He always thought of applying scientific achievements in the interest of the village, society and country. Today more than 70 percent of the country’s population is taking advantage of the Doordarshan service in their homes. Full credit goes to Vikram Sarabhai. Through Doordarshan, villagers are benefiting in all areas of education, agriculture, development, entertainment, sports, medicine, social reform, etc. All the labor behind him is from Sarabhai. His attachment to Indian culture was very deep. He died accidentally during the launch of Thumba rocket. Their work will continue to inspire young scientists.
